Pie on the Mountain

Today I took advantage of my day off to go on a drive into the country. I went to Julian, which is a charming and historic mountain village in Southeast California. It’s an old mining town.

It’s also an apple growing area! So, there is much apple pie about.

The drive was interesting; the temperature ranged between 63 and 95 degrees F as I went from beach to desert to mountain and then back. Quite beautiful too; Spring has hit the chaparral and birds are tweeting, live oaks waving gently in the breeze, placid cows watching me zoom by.

Dinner consisted of a chicken pot pie turnover, garlic mashed potatoes, and grilled veggies, with iced tea out of a cowboy boot-shaped glass. The café where I ate is the canonical Julian apple pie joint, and is usually a 2-hour wait and very crowded; not today. They were playing the oddest music in there. It was “contemporary christian” which is to say white bread evangelical crap, but really odd. The style of one artist varied from country to soft rock to finally show tunes. The woman at the table next to me remarked on the strangeness of the stuff. “I’m ok with gospel or christian rock but this is..urrm…”

Food was great though.

Not exactly Xanadu

I had a few shots of El Tesoro de Don Felipe Añejo Tequila last night. I recommend it; great stuff, very smooth, very tasty, no hangover! And I dreamed.

In my dream, a local climate cataclysm occurred, related to a volcano, causing hail to become larger and larger. Eventually a wall-safe-sized chunk of ice smashed through the roof of my house, destroying the kitchen. It was a terribly frightening experience. We had to find somewhere else to live. I called the City and they gave me an address. This turned out to be an Irish bar and Restaurant called the “Somewhere & What”. The Somewhere was the bar, and the What was the restaurant, and they were connected. It was a good place to hang out but not a shelter.

A band was playing there that included my coworker Sean (who actually used to be in a band I know of called the Pope-a-Lopes!), and brienigma. They pleased me greatly by playing Pere Ubu’s classic “30 Seconds Over Tokyo”, and Enigma was especially good at the crazy feedback guitar.

We never did fix the roof. It was ok that way as long as we closed our bedroom doors to avoid getting too cold.

I now want to open the “Somewhere & What”. Brian, start learning the guitar.

Long story short, local suburban teen makes big money on Internet fraud and illegal sports gambling. Is thrown off his high school baseball team. Sues. Wishes to become hip hop star.

“I have a story to tell like no other,” Bartiromo said. “Every other musician’s story is a rags-to-riches story. They whine about poverty then make it big. I had it all, I was at the top and I’m now hitting rock bottom The only way to express that is through rap and hip-hop.”

I’m super glad this guy is representing himself.

at home he’s a tourist

I have to work Saturday, but I have Monday and Tuesday off. At first I thought WOO I WILL GO SOMEWHERE and thought maybe San Francisco? Las Vegas?

But I can only really afford Las Vegas and not SF. And on mature reflection I don’t want to do that alone again, as much as the people watching while drunk was a blast before.

So I’ll probably just take a more local car trip (mountains, desert) on one of those days and be boring and save money.

Any suggestions, people?
