DANGER BEES
This is how it will look, folks.
Pete gave me the update on that crazy “let’s simulate a pandemic including all the creepy quarantine arrests” story. The best paragraph in the new story:
Walsh said the drill didn’t apparently alarm area residents because county officials didn’t receive any calls, but she added that the investigators reported that small groups of curious people gathered to watch the actors be cuffed with plastic handcuffs and taken away in unmarked cars.
Oh hey great. When they take me to Camp Halliburton, there will be a small group of curious people watching.

I ran across this on Flickr. There is a huge crater in Darvaza, Turkmenistan that is full of fire from natural gas that just spews out and burns. Forever.

They busted a terrorist cell and weapons depot in San Bernardino County. There were more than 1,300 weapons, including machine guns, silencers, and a grenade. There were five pounds of C4 plastic explosive and a terrorist training camp at a chicken ranch in Pomona.
But it’s a below-the-fold news story. Why aren’t there breaking story alerts, live press conferences, CNN 3-D reconstructions of the scene, constant re-running of grainy arrest footage?
Because he’s a Cuban exile, of course. Those are the happy kind of terrorist.

Human cannonballs
The old circus trick of firing a person from a cannon is being considered by the US Defence Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) as a way to get special forces, police officers and fire fighters onto the roofs of tall buildings in a hurry.
A ramp with side rails would be placed on the ground near the target building at an angle of about 80°. A (very brave) person would then sit in a chair, like a pilot’s ejection seat, attached to the ramp.
Compressed air from a cylinder underneath would be rapidly released to shoot the chair up the ramp’s guide rails. At the top the chair would come to an instant halt, leaving the person to fly up and over the edge of the roof, to hopefully land safely on top of the building.
Of course, the trick is to get the trajectory just right. But the DARPA patent suggests a computer could automatically devise the correct angle and speed of ascent. It also claims that a 4-metre-tall launcher could put a man on the top of a 5 storey building in less than 2 seconds. I think I’ll take the stairs.
Read the full patent here.

JE VAIS A LA GLOIRE! From the Register today:
SANTA ANA – A 19-year-old woman’s scarf wrapped around her motorcycle’s back wheel and pulled her off the bike this morning on the Costa Mesa (55) Freeway near Santa Clara Avenue, authorities said.
The motorcycle continued down the freeway until it eventually fell over, police said.
