home again home again

With one last visit to Aquarius Records I ended my vacation and headed back south, stopping for lunch with . The Aquarius run netted me an old Savage Republic reissure from the 80s (Tragic Figures), a horrifically hilarious metal album by the GOAT THROWERS, some Bollywood soundtrack stuff, and Van Morrison’s infamous contract breaking record.

But I don’t have to go to work until Monday. Woo!

amoeba amoeba amoeba

Not the Adolescents song this time, but the record store in the Haight. What a place. Picked up the new Butthole Surfers, some Negativland and Eugene Chadbourne, some SABBATH! and a nice Coltrane all for ~$70 because most of it was used.

Tonight it’s noodles followed by brisk walk followed by espresso I think. And then tomorrow I bid adieu to this fair city by the bay and drive back down.

What a lovely vacation it’s been!

walkin walkin walkin!

Today I walked up and down Mission in a fruitless quest for the misplaced Cartoon Art Museum, then walked the correct way on Mission and found it. It was nice, if a bit small. Very cool to see an original Gorey or two right up close. I then rehydrated in the Metreon, which is a big mall pretending to be the Future. The Future has not changed much since I was a kid.

After a suitable slump back at the hotel I ate too much french food at Cafe Claude (yum) and then bused off across town to meet and go for a walk with her in a very cool park the name of which I have just forgotten, but which had dogs and a great view, followed by beverages and conversation at a friendly Ethiopian-run cafe.

Altogether a very satisfying day. Tomorrow… RECORD SHOPPING! or something.

Wow, what a great town. I’m staying at this crazy hotel which is full of hip-hop musicians and burned out friendly old sixties rejects. I’m smack between Chinatown and Union Square, in a kind of tiny French Quarter.

So far I’ve mostly just done walking and eating, both very satisfactory. Had a tremendous Italian meal in a sidewalk cafe on a sunny afternoon, which is about as close to Paradise as I can get. Also one very nice Chinese meal (prawns with walnuts!). Tomorrow it’s off to museums, specifically the Cartoon Art Museum which has a Gorey exhibit.

I ate at John’s Grill tonight, of Maltese Falcon fame. I had a big piece of cow and two martinis. I dunno how businessmen in the old days had a “three martini lunch” since a “two martini dinner” left me feeling as though I’d been under a hippo.

I went to a Scottish Imports Store and bought a bottle of good single malt whisky from a laid off former dot-com sysadmin today. “I specialized in startups,” he said mournfully as he wrapped up my purchase, “I should have diversified when I hit it big the first time with Marimba.”

geekin it up in steinbeck town

So, I’m almost done with USENIX 2002 here in lovely Monterey. Tonight was the dessert reception at the aquarium (yes you read right). At one point I was eating an eclair while one hirsute hacker near me disputed with another about the relative virtues of assembly programming on the VAX versus M68K as a large grouper and two small rockfish looked over their shoulders and moved their fishy mouths as if to disagree with both of them.

I took some pictures mostly of fish and one of some famous hackers, which are famous if you’re a geek like me.

Tomorrow, after a couple of last sessions, it’s off to San Francisco for a WEEK of UNINHIBITED HEDONISM. Woo-hoo!

Mysteries of West Los Angeles

Near my job, next door to a flower shop and an AA meeting room, there is something called the Euripedes Barsanulfo Doctrine Center.

Web searching for Mr. Barsanulfo produces only pages in Portuguese, for which Google’s translations produce odd effects:

CHILD And SCHOOL

In this teeny one that it passes the future walks.
The child is the smile of the life embelezando the world.
Let us love this infant, offering to it the elements to changed itself into an honored citizen.
Let us transform our home into school of blessings and in them let us make masters on behalf of the love for the santificante task of superior construction.
Let us educate it, disciplining the impulses to it, but let us not forget in disciplining them, also, so that our voice possesss the heat of the example that designates the comment to it with the force of the accomplishment.
Therefore, in let us not forget them that to teach it is equally to suffer.
The first step of who teaches must be given in the direction to educate itself.
It is not educated being uneducated. It is not disciplined without being disciplined.
The child – fragile clay, base of all social construction – is, before everything, a duplicating machine. E is in this particular that if avulta the value of the School.
The School is not only one dedicated temple to the instruction. It is an altar for the cult of the education and a sanctuary for the love.
Schools confide and the crime will run away from the Land.
The primary Schools with the lights of the love and the goodness are taken advantage, and the wars will changed into arts macabras of the past.
In all the times the School has been the force more powerful than the world knows, making the campaign against the ignorance, the biggest adversary of the human spirit.
The brutality of ?tila if developed for lack of the aid of a School of alfabetiza??o.
The hitlerista savagery attempted against against the Civilization because the School if poluiu, changedding itself into quarter.
To domesticate they are enough relho and the rope, firm will in the impiedade, giving origin to the respect that is born in furnas of the fear. To educate, however, it is essential to love.
Who loves, generates affection and affinity.
In the School where the love if unfolds, the education if improves.
S?crates, in the ?gora of Atenas, and Christ, in the Mountain of the Galil?ia, reverenciaram the safe School that he educates and.
The child advances; the School waits; the adult helps.
All we are educators. We educate for that we make, we educate with what we say. Who does not educate in the positive direction, building, educates, in the negative direction, damaging the character.
It is educated, therefore, well or badly, according to proper possibilities.
When we love, however, we always educate well, because the love that if raises knows to listen to that voice different, of the reason, that corrects and repairs incessantly.
We respect the master and let us honor the School, arm and cradle of the future world.
E this teeny one that it goes there, is the man of tomorrow that it waits for us, since now.
Let us greet the child with the School – this modeladora nobleman of the generations human beings.
