I could have told them all this years ago

There is a Yahoo! Discussion Group solely devoted to pissed-off investors in Diedrich Coffee:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/diedrichforum/

The Register ran an article about it today.

I like the fact that the pissed-off investor’s pissed-off introduction refers to Gloria Jean’s as their “best business.” Actually I remember their “best business” and it was kinda different from that. Kiss your cash goodbye, guys. Maybe Starbucks will give you a nickel on your dollar.

dot mac: not worth it for me

My .mac membership will renew in 22 days and and I don’t think I’ll keep it. I don’t need the email or the net storage, and the backup was the only thing I really liked. I’d successfully restored my settings more than once after some mishap. But everything else was either redundant for me or just missing. They kept promising all kinds of cool freebies but nothing showed up for about a year. Liars with pants on fire.

Today my daily backup fired off and crashed with the message that my iDisk was full, which is un-possible because I don’t put anything there. Attempts to find out what were filling the disk failed; it was so slow that I couldn’t even find large files or directory sizes on it without timeouts. Meanwhile the attempt made my entire system grind to a halt; other applications stopped receiving clicks, the screen began to update slowly, the whole overload drill. The logs got spammed up with diskarbitrationd explaining in detail that each application was not responding.

I finally managed to unmount the sonofabitch and ran backup again, and manually removed all my backups. Once again everything ground to a halt, no progress bar, nothing, and I lived by faith as the LORD commands. After about fifteen minutes it suddenly finished and there was all my disk space back.

The backup doesn’t clean up after itself and I see no option to fine tune that. I’m not paying annual rent on something less configurable than a product I can buy. Foo on them.

So that’s it for dot mac.

LJ stalkeriffic security things they maybe should change

Poking around my account while logged out, I notice:

1. You can always see when someone has updated via the “mode=full” version of the LJ profile, whether you’re entitled to see the entry or not.

2. In the archive/calendar view you can see how many entries were made per day whether you have to access to the entries or not. If you click the number of entries for a day on which no posts are accessible to you, you’ll get an error that says there aren’t any posts that day, but you already know that’s not true.

and that’s enough stalking myself, i’ll go blind etc.

I get this feeling that dodgeball isn’t really catching on around here

yesterday: “we just sent a message to your 3 friends in L.A. letting them now you’re at kean coffee”

today: “we just sent a message to your 2 friends in L.A. letting them know you’re at starbucks at 17th & newport”

maybe this kind of service doesn’t work so well in a spread out suburban area and it’s dodgeball L.A. and not dodgeball OC for a reason. and maybe it also suits my continued coffeehouse slackerdom better than my friends’ lifestyles?

also why am i typing in lower case, senator you’re no ee cummings
