sick day (lizard mix)

Just finished watching some of what my Tivo has been storing. I saw an episode of Monster Garage which goes pretty well with cold medicine. Also watched a documentary about David Icke, which was very well filmed. Apparently lots of anti-racists think that when he talks about the world being run by 12 foot lizards from outer space, he means “the Jews”, and therefore try to stop his appearances. Poor guy really seems to mean “lizards” and doesn’t get why the ADL hates his guts so much.

He’s a fairly sympathetic loonball. Very articulate, pleasant, good sense of humor, nice to his kid. I don’t agree with his contention that a small group of bad people run the world (I believe in accident, foolishness, and ordinary human evil) and I particularly don’t believe in the lizard part, but it’s hard not to feel for the guy.

The lizards, though, Dave. The lizards.

A matter of taste

I had a bit of music running through my head tonight (“Small Town Spree” by Peter Case) and, reviewing the lyrics, realized that it wasn’t as good a song as I’d thought back in 1986 or so when it came out. Reflecting on this, I further realized that a lot of what I thought of as “good” years ago I now don’t like in varying degrees. So, a question for the Group Mind:

Assuming only adult tastes (none of what you liked or disliked at age 9), what tastes in music, or film, or food, or other arts have changed for you? Particularly, what particular artists or edibles or designs (cars, architecture) etc. have lost or gained value for you?

Examples for me include:

  • Musical artists I adored 15 years ago that I now think are clumsy and overrated (the above Mr. Case and several others)
  • Cilantro, which I thought was horrible at age 19 and now I can’t get enough of
  • Mercedez-Benz cars, which I once thought were the apex of beauty; now I think they’re boring businessman’s cars
  • Science Fiction, which ruled my world in early college and now makes me gag almost every time

Comment away if you’re interested, either with your own changes in taste or about the phenomenon.

We return again to the theme of the Eternal Return. I’ve had that “back in high school” feeling all week. Half expecting to see my dad come home from work, or drive the old MG down to Mike’s place on the Peninsula. Instead, I went to Trader Joe’s to get food tonight (sweet Meyer lemons, peanut butter, cilantro, canned beans, cheddar, etc.) and saw a lowered Integra with the bling bling wheels, etc. Huge sign in rear window announced the driver as SINISTOR. Who the fuck is that.. the janitor at Castle Grayskull?

For fans of the inane government terror website, I heartily recommend this remix as referred to me by torgoxrss. If a chemical weapon follows you home, act casual.

Hi, Dr. Nick!

Today was the day that I found out that popular over-the-counter allergy remedy Claritin is not for me. I found this out by falling asleep for approximately 14 hours. I think I’ll deal with the sniffles now. I’d like that day back.

This did get me out of the insane all nighter that some of my coworkers get tonight as we merge two websites and everything breaks. I hope it goes better than it looks like it will. It’s one of those technology tasks that seems simple on the face of it and turns out to be Moving the Titanic Three Inches to the Left on deadline. I’ll probably end up dealing with the debris, chaos, and toxic residue of the build tomorrow anyway so I don’t feel so bad.

I’m getting that feeling again in my life that I’m skating over big trouble, as though I was out on the ice pirouetting and below me there was a volcanic bubbling sea of trouble. There’s so much to avoid in my life if I’m going to keep skating, but what if the ice melts?

It’s alarming to realize that most of the improvement in mental health I’ve had over the last 10 years has consisted of avoiding or ignoring my major malfunctions. Two cheers for avoidance.

notes from underground

My coworker’s gallbladder went south on him and he’s in the hospital awaiting surgery. This is bad enough (pain, surgery, expense) but to make it better, my other coworkers are calling him for help on various projects. “Hey, I know you’re not feeling well, but we have this caching issue on…”

Last night I was pulled over by Newport’s finest for speeding on the S curves (I was really moving), but they had another call to run to so I didn’t get a ticket. Alleluia; se-lah. Also, I’m gonna slow down for a bit.

Boy there are some dumb “anti-war” ideas going around. My mom keeps getting a chain letter that tells her to forward it to some address at the U.N., and moveon.org (i can’t stand them) apparently wants everyone to spam their senators and congressmen on one particular day. Folks, use real mail with a stamp, and don’t break the U.N.’s SMTP server. Sending email about an issue is only slightly more effective than pointing your head at your congressman and thinking strong thoughts.

I am getting the urge to go to Vegas. This probably means that I’m running away from something. Oh. wait. MY LIFE! THAT’S IT!!

Vroom!!!

When I grow up, I want to be cool like Jamie Kitman. He manages cool rock bands that I like (Femmes, TMBG), he is a Car Guy like me only he gets to drive the neato cars I’ll never see, and I share his ideology. Who says you can’t be a lefty and a car nut? Hmm? HMM?

Plus, he broke the leaded gasoline conspiracy story, which is fascinating stuff.
