So ask yourself today: Could I have elm blight?

Eli Lilly & Company were kind enough to put this brochure in my doctor’s office. Actually, what they did was fund the University of Michigan who did it. It has things all over it saying how approved by all doctors it is, etc.

As you’ll see it consists of wan, blurry folk-art people wondering if they might have depression or if their medical problems might be getting worse due to depression. The message is “you quite likely have depression even if you think you don’t”. The best part, I think, is the series of scripts for convincing your doctor that you need treatment.

Faux naive iconography and suspect language behind the cut:

Also, leeches.

Talking to my psychiatrist yesterday, I told him about the neurofeedback I was going for. Of course I have a skeptical attitude; it seems very pie-in-the-sky. I told him my brother’s joke about cures due to magnetism: “Magnets are so smart and obliging. No matter what the situation, they always know how to do the right thing!”

He agreed, but he also agreed that there’s useful research and good results in some previously crazy areas. Not only is neurofeedback proving increasingly useful, but this insane thing where they implant an electrical stimulus attached to the vagus nerve has been dramatically successful in intractable depression. Yes, stimulating a big nerve, zap zap.

To make things even weirder, there are some promising results from attaching big fucking electromagnets to the skull. Hello, Mesmer!

Anyway I’m off to my phrenologist’s.

Welcome to Innotech

I love my monster.com job updates, not because I am looking for a job right now, but because of things like this.

I’m glad they don’t just passively reject the transactional staffing industry paradigm. But couldn’t they do so proactively? It’s great that they can handle projects of varied size and scope, too. The companies with the fixed size and scope are awfully weird. And I knew about globalization, but when did the economy become project–based? I thought it was all about shit like steel, and wheat, and oil, and the value of the Euro.

Yeah, so if you could not route my packets to Google through an RFC1918 address, that would be great. Yeah. Glad they’re just Diedrich’s ISP and not mine.

Edit: looks like lots of other people are having this problem. I think someone bent their router, and stuff. Oops!

HOW TO DESTROY THE UNIVERSE (January ’06)!

I just got this press release from Mobilization. Savage Republic and Blixa Bargeld are gonna tour the West Coast! I AM SO EXCITED. VERY EXCITED, HERE.

Portlanders take note: Savage Republic is playing Portland on November 10 as well. The text on mobilization.com refers to a “Northwest Tour” but I don’t know where else they’re playing. Fans of loud clanking noises, Middle East/African themed instrumentals, and Joy Division-y gloomgrind music should attend. Correction, must attend. Edited press release below.

BLIXA BARGELD is performing a rare solo vocal concert entitled “Rede/Speech”. Be aware that this is NOT a “speech”. Rather, Blixa uses an invented form of vocal alchemy through direct audience interactions and pre-defined topics. Similar to his part in Einsturzende Neubauten, Blixa serves as a sonic architect, directing and molding form and beauty from randomness and chaos. Blixa has his vocals processed live by long time Neubauten sound engineer Boris Wilsdorf. Although hard to categorize, this technique allows for a “real time” interplay of vocal ideas with patterns and rhythms produced by the audio effects themselves (similar at least in concept with Diamanda Galas). The performance is really a duet between performer and engineer. . Together audience and shaman pick words and phrases to create an aural blend of pseudo scientific ephemera and magic, mesmerizing the audience and building to a classic Blixa crescendo. This performance promises to remind us why Blixa was selected to give the voice and screams to the mummy in the 1999 “The Mummy”. This is the US debut of this mesmerizing performance that has appeared throughout Europe for over a decade.

NOTE: The U.S. performances will be mainly in English. A limited edition DVD of the “Rede/Speech” performance will be available at the tour.
