While driving to work, I heard on the radio a band that was obviously trying to be Radiohead. I’m not sure who they were, but they had all the signs of an imitator band: a similar sound, similar chord progressions, me-too vocal technique. It started me off thinking about something that has been bugging the back of my brain a lot about art, and influence.

Who gets imitated?

Looks like Irish Dan had it backwards

..and the_idiot_heart had it right. My intensive search of the interweb shows that Bushmills is the Irish Protestant Whiskey and Jameson is the Irish Catholic Whiskey, at least historically. Bushmills being in County Antrim, etc.

I hope Dan doesn’t go back to the Old Sod and make that mistake. Maybe they’d excuse him as American, but probably not.

double plus ungood: Diversity, Human Resource Services, and Risk Programs.

For some reason my Monster update had this job, at Cal Poly Pomona. The job is listed as “Manager, Diversity and Compliance” which is a title that would have made Orwell dance a little jig had he thought of it. Here’s the job description, which is acrobatic in its use of modern terminology. I love the use of the word “Risk” which is an all purpose bureaucratic term for “Oh shit”. Also, the appending of “services” to “Human Resource”. I was working in a medical records department years ago when, with great fanfare, the name of the department was changed from “Medical Records” to “Medical Records Services”.

Also, the phrase “monitoring the diversity component” made me grin really widely.

Under the general guidance of the Associate Vice President for Diversity, Human Resource Services and Risk Programs, the Manager of Diversity and Compliance is responsible for the administration of the University’s equity and diversity programs. Specific duties include handling investigations related to discrimination, sexual harassment, disability, and related matters; handling complaints filed with the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, and the Office of Civil Rights; and representing the University at depositions and hearings on equity. Planning, developing and implementing University-wide training and educational programs on equity, diversity, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), discrimination, sexual harassment and federally mandated affirmative action polices. The incumbent will assist the University in developing recruiting strategies by monitoring the diversity component in the recruitment and selection of department administrators, and in conjunction with the Office of Faculty Affairs assist in developing the diversity component for faculty recruitment and selection. Additional responsibilities include preparing the University’s Affirmative Action Plan; managing an analyst position and overseeing the production of statistical reports; and recommending and implementing programs and procedures to achieve the University’s diversity initiatives. Other duties include managing the Assistive Accommodations Fund and evaluating requests for reasonable accommodations. The candidate will have a bachelor’s degree in Public Administration, Business Administration, Human Resource Management or related field (Master’s or Juris Doctor degree preferred) and five to seven years of progressively responsible EEO or HR Management experience including significant experience in handling various types of investigations related to sexual harassment and discrimination. Experience in a collective bargaining environment required.
