Enrique, Hans, and Andrew also had little lambs but this was not recorded at the time.

  1. I missed this on Pro-Med, but Aetiology caught it: Starving Miskito natives in Nicaragua are getting an inexplicable psychosis called “Grisis Signis”. From my own point of view, being in a famine-stricken region due to a plague of rats would be enough reason to go nuts with a machete. Fascinating story, though.
  2. The classic Tommy Seebach “Apache” video has at least two remixes
  3. Oops. Just because he’s an environmental activist doesn’t mean he burned all the SUVs.
  4. Shades of the hashishim: Guerillas in Iraq may be hopping themselves up with military hallucinogens. That sure would help if you were a suicide bomber. It’s easier to be an asshole when you’re high, too. Chris Hedges’ account of the Bosnia war shows that hardcore murderers about to commit genocide always got really drunk first.

  8. San Francisco cheese mongers and other cheesy friends, beware of morons who think you have cocaine. (Thanks, vark!)
  9. Let’s deconstruct Christmas music. It’s got to beat listening to the stuff.

  1. The loophole in the Turing Test is that a machine can not only pass the test from sheer computing power and algorithms, but if a machine is able to successfully emulate a human because the humans are getting more dumberer, that’s also technically a passing grade.

  2. LOVE the Christmas music thing. Sometime when I have a few hours I’ll read the whole thing.
But I just heard on the radio last night that execrable Bob Geldof song. And for the first time in how many dozens of listenings it finally occurred to me how patronizing and ridiculous it is. “Where nothing ever grows?!” WTF!

      1. In his defense, I think he means that in a bitterly ironic way. I think here he’s pointing an accusing finger at the listener for his lack of compassion for the starving, suffering multitudes on that benighted continent where there is no food or water and in fact, no snow even, and where — get this — They don’t even know it’s Christmas!
But maybe not! The rest of the song is so awful, maybe he is completely serious.

      2. I was always confused by “do they know it’s Christmas any way”. As in, why should this matter? Until I realized that what he meant was that they were benighted nonwhite nonwestern non-Christian kiddies who were missing out on the perfect neo-Dickens Christmas that all us WASPs take for granted and it was our obligation as wealthy Christians to BRING IT TO THEM.
Hello, what year is this? 1830? WHAT AN ASSHOLE!

      3. if they don’t know it’s christmas, it’s our duty to remind them, and make sure they either spend every last penny on crap they don’t need, or feel bad for not having any money to spend on it!
