He needs someone to adjust his monkey.

Carlos

Stuart Pearson ( changeng and http://www.stuartpearson.net ) played the opening of the new Diedrich on 17th. He brought Carlos (above), his new drummer, who is rock steady. He also did the Lady in the Radiator Song from Eraserhead and “Venus in Furs” by the Velvet Underground. I’m glad someone understands that “covers only” doesn’t have to mean “the worst of the Eagles on a god-damned loop, forever”.

The new location is okay except that the patio blows and the bar inside has no bar railing so it’s like the tortures of the Inquisition sitting there. Was nice seeing Sandi; her gigantic Nightmare Before Christmas tattoo array is colored in now and it’s fairly spectacular.

Rakata bay bay, rakata bay BEE.

One of my favorite albums ever is Morgan Fisher’s Miniatures. In 1980, he asked people for one minute long audio pieces, and compiled them.

The cast includes Pete Seeger, Andy Partridge, Ralph Steadman, Half Japanese, the Residents, and Neil Innes and his kid singing “Cum On Feel the Noyze”. Steadman sings a John Donne poem outside in the rain while playing some kind of dilapidated pump organ. It’s one of the few records I can without hyperbole call unique.

My favorite track is from jazzman and bon vivant George Melly, who performs a Kurt Schwitters dada poem. He claims that reciting this poem to some muggers once saved his life. It’s not hard to hear why:

George Melly – Sounds That Saved My Life (mp3, 1.2M, 58 seconds).

It was a pain to get this. The CD version of the record has the tracks grouped five or six per CD track, and I had to use Amadeus II to perform some rough ‘n’ ready sound surgery and then reencode it. Good thing it’s just Yelled Vocal Quality.

Hurdy Gurdy Guy update

He’s also got an LJ now! changeng is him.

Hey everybody!

Stuart Pearson here. The guy with the slinky from http://www.stuartpearson.net . Summer is here and everyone seems to be shiny. Are you shiny? Here’s a test – face your mirror and squint your eyes so that you can barely see yourself. Do you see a glow around you? I bet you do – you’re a shiny kinda person.

accordionThere’s a few schedule changes coming up, so if you were planning on witnessing the drunken bachanalia(?)my shows are increasingly becoming, check the changes below. To read how odd they are becoming, go to my website and read my new blog “Tales From The Coffeehouse”.

Also, wednesday night will witness the debut of my new drum machine – it’s a 12 inch tall motorized monkey that bangs cymbals. Along with the toy piano I dragged out of a dumpster last week, I’m now rocking harder and slamming out the block rockin’ beats. My monkey needs a name! Please send suggestions to chang.eng@verizon.net .

Also, I need new photos for my website! I see people taking pictures of my nitwittery, so please send me some! I’ll give credit under each photo and post your website addy if you wish.

ahh SHIT, i liked this guy

Karl Mueller died.

Met him on their first tour in 1985. I’d really loved Say What You Will, Clarence: Karl Sold the Truck, especially “Religiavision”, and then they put out Made to be Broken and wow, had to go see them. They played the Anti-Club and maybe 10 people showed up. Oddly I kept meeting people years later who’d been at that show. Soul Asylum was a really amazing band around that time; loud and passionate. They did great mashups, too. I particularly remember them doing a mash of Gang of Four’s “Damaged Goods” with Prince’s “The Cross”.

Unfortunately by the time they started to do really well they’d changed their musical style almost completely and I didn’t enjoy it. I liked everything up to Hang Time, but when they got into that “Runaway Train” phase they totally lost me.

Weird irony that Karl got throat cancer. I’d expected Dave to croak (literally) from that, the way he destroyed his voice.

Sorry, Karl.

Wonderful/Terrifying Request

Boy I’d like to see this, I hope they find someone. Spreading the word, here. Also I love the phrase “fire friendly venues”. But I’d really love to see Blixa do some solo stuff.

Subject: [Mobilization] Blixa Bargeld needs a Theater Space for Destroy 5 West Coast tour: OCT 7-8, OCT 14-16
Date: June 21, 2005 2:52:09 AM PDT

We are looking for a nice seated theater space for the 5th “How to Destroy the Universe Festival”. It will take place in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Portland and Seattle. Blixa Bargeld has been very kind in agreeing to perform a very rare appearance of his solo work here in the United states. He also says he will be performing his pieces in English. You can find samples of Blixa’s solo work at:

http://www.blixa-bargeld.com/proj/rede.html

The festival will also include performances by F-SPACE. The other artists are yet TBD. We are accepting applications for the festival now.

If you have any venue contacts, please let us know. Blixa has requested the event take place in a non-traditional venue, different than the typical rock club setting. Fire friendly venues would be great for F-SPACE, but are not required.
