L.A. Boy Scouts new merit badge: ‘Respect Copyrights’

patchLOS ANGELES (AP) — A Boy Scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, etc., etc. He is also respectful of copyrights.

Boy Scouts in the Los Angeles area will now be able to earn a merit patch for learning about the evils of downloading pirated movies and music.

The patch shows a film reel, a music CD and the international copyright symbol, a “C” enclosed in a circle.

The movie industry has developed the curriculum.

“Working with the Boy Scouts of Los Angeles, we have a real opportunity to educate a new generation about how movies are made, why they are valuable, and hopefully change attitudes about intellectual property theft,” Dan Glickman, chairman of the Motion Picture Association of America, said Friday.

Scouts will be instructed in the basics of copyright law and learn how to identify five types of copyrighted works and three ways copyrighted materials may be stolen.

Scouts also must choose one activity from a list that includes visiting a movie studio to see how many people can be harmed by film piracy. They also can create public service announcements urging others not to steal movies or music.

  1. “visiting a movie studio to see how many people can be harmed by film piracy”
This brings to mind many amusing images, I expect none of them intended by the original author.

  2. Ya, read about that earlier today. What boggles me is why the MPAA would think of the Boy Scouts as an effective channel of anything.
Perhaps I’m in denial here, but do the Boy Scouts make a fart in a firestorm’s worth of any kind of difference these days? At all?
In my youff, all the scouts meant was “the kids in uniform futzing around with balsa wood cars.” I’d no interest at all, being busy with my rockets.

  3. Heh, I’m going down to talk to the owner of one of the local Chinese wholesalers to convince the owner to run off a batch of knock-off badges with ‘corypights’ written across the bottom.
I bet I sell a million of ’em.
(My favourite knock-off of all time is a wooden hair clip carved with: ABCDEGH)

  4. My fiancé, who is an Eagle Scout, stared dumbfoundedly at that for a while and then went back to coding.
I think I’ll go watch a pirated movie now.

  5. Hmmm. They can be sensitive to intangible things such as multi-million dollar movie studios but still not accept gays?
May as well have a patch for proper pubic grooming. “Look Mom, I shaved!”

  6. I pirate but I respect those who don’t, and I keep my shit low-profile. I also smoke weed. Both are victimless. I really wouldn’t buy music if I couldn’t steal it. I’d make tapes of the fucking radio. That’s just the way it is.

  7. Post Modern Scouts Honor….

    to the young believers
We will train our blue-eyed men
to be young believers … ”
    (fair use quote? 🙂 )

  9. Do boy scouts still go camping or do they only sell $27 buckets of popcorn in front of grocery stores and now lobbying for the music industry??? Seriously, what happened to tents and finding your way with a compass? Good God I hope the Girl Scouts don’t give in and join this mess!
