    1. I really liked that town. It was about the right size for me: big enough to have good bookstores and not big enough to have street gangs. It reminded me of medium sized California college towns like San Luis, but there was something about Lawrence that I just clicked with.

      1. Neat! I’ve only really been in Lawrence a small number of times, but for a while I lived about 45 minutes away in Shawnee, which is of course a very different scene. I lived with and who had previously been students at KU, but eventually it was just and I, and we were immobile, so I didn’t get to see much of it. It was pretty neat in places and reminded me a fair bit of Asheville, NC.
Under what circumstances did you end up there? I’ve run across a lot of people with Lawrence ties, and it amazes me a little. It’s small enough, and they were there a short enough period of time, that they have some common feelings on it, but weren’t there together, or anything. Lots of people seem to have passed through. Fascinates me, really.

      2. I spent 9 months living in KCMO working for Sprint on contract. I used to go to Lawrence just about every weekend for a day and have a beer in the brewpub, shop for records at the amazing Love Garden record shop, ogle college girls, shop for books, etc.
It’s this cool little patch of beatnik fun in the middle of the Great Flat.

  1. I lived in Kaua’i for about a year. My grandmother moved to Hawa’i when I was 3, and I went to live with her after high school. (My intent was to go to U-Hawai’i, but, ahhhh… who want to study when there are waves?)
