In the desert
I saw a creature, naked, bestial,
Who, squatting upon the ground,
Held his heart in his hands,
And ate of it.
I said, “Is it good, friend?”
“It is bitter—bitter,” he answered;
“But I like it
“Because it is bitter,
“And because it is my heart.”

introduced me to stephen crane, and to that poem. He thought I would like it, and I did. It was immensely satisfying.

I love that poem. R bought me a Stephen Crane poem book for christmas this year and I read it all the first night. Some of them are silly but entirely profound.
