song of the night

They shake your hand and they smile
And they buy you a drink
They say we’ll be your friends
We’ll stick with you till the end
Ah but everybody’s only
Looking out for themselves
And you say well who can you trust
I’ll tell you it’s just
Nobody else’s money–

Money changes everything
Money changes everything
We think we know what we’re doin’
We don’t pull the strings
It’s all in the past now
Money changes everything

– Cyndi Lauper, “Money Changes Everything”, from “She’s So Unusual”, 1983. originally written with The Brains in 1978.

My friend Jeff Schwager played this for me in 1985 or so and told me about Blue Angel and the Brains. He and I talked a lot about music and he taught me a lot. I wonder what happened to him. Last I heard he was the arts editor at Mr. Showbiz but that’s been dead for a while.

  1. Jeff… Here’s one possible answer…
Jeff Schwager (VP of Content Development): For the last fifteen years, Jeff has worked in the convergence zone of movies and new media. In the late ’80s, he was director of programming for the Los Angeles pay-TV station Z Channel; more recently he held the same position at Paul Allen’s interactive TV company Digeo. He was editor-in-chief of Mr. Showbiz, the Internet’s first entertainment website, and vice president of content for Reel.com, the first e-commerce site devoted entirely to movies. He helped launch the Disney web portal Go.com, and managed operations of the websites Wall of Sound and Celebsite. He has also been managing editor of the film industry trade Boxoffice magazine; was a film critic for Los Angeles View; and produced laserdisc releases for Image Entertainment.
