Pie on the Mountain

Today I took advantage of my day off to go on a drive into the country. I went to Julian, which is a charming and historic mountain village in Southeast California. It’s an old mining town.

It’s also an apple growing area! So, there is much apple pie about.

The drive was interesting; the temperature ranged between 63 and 95 degrees F as I went from beach to desert to mountain and then back. Quite beautiful too; Spring has hit the chaparral and birds are tweeting, live oaks waving gently in the breeze, placid cows watching me zoom by.

Dinner consisted of a chicken pot pie turnover, garlic mashed potatoes, and grilled veggies, with iced tea out of a cowboy boot-shaped glass. The café where I ate is the canonical Julian apple pie joint, and is usually a 2-hour wait and very crowded; not today. They were playing the oddest music in there. It was “contemporary christian” which is to say white bread evangelical crap, but really odd. The style of one artist varied from country to soft rock to finally show tunes. The woman at the table next to me remarked on the strangeness of the stuff. “I’m ok with gospel or christian rock but this is..urrm…”

Food was great though.
